For students facing difficult circumstances at home, having access to groceries and everyday essentials can ease some of the pressures they carry into the classroom. At St. George’s High School in Grand Bahama, a school-led food pantry is helping provide that support, with a recent contribution from the Cable Bahamas Cares Foundation extending its reach.
The Foundation presented the school with a $1,000 AML gift card to support the pantry, which currently assists more than 500 students. Established in 2024 by Attendance Officer Rosezena Parker, the initiative provides practical help to students experiencing food insecurity and other challenges at home.
For Ms. Parker, the pantry grew from a personal commitment to caring for students beyond their academic needs.
“Usually during the school semester, I would personally shop and put packages together for students who are experiencing difficulties,” she shared. “Through corporate sponsorship, however, we can do even more. When you invest in children, you are investing in their future. You never know the true impact of helping a student feel supported and cared for.”
Her words capture the purpose behind the pantry: providing essentials while helping students feel that someone recognizes their circumstances and cares about their future. Corporate contributions help build on that commitment, giving the school additional resources to respond to students’ needs.
The donation aligns with the Foundation’s Community Development pillar, which supports educational programmes that empower innovation and entrepreneurship. Helping students meet their basic needs supports their ability to engage in learning, develop their talents and pursue opportunities.
“We continually challenge ourselves to identify meaningful ways to strengthen the communities we serve,” said Brittney Fountain, Director of Marketing. “Supporting this pantry helps students come to school nourished and ready to learn. It is an investment in their potential as future leaders and citizens who will contribute to the progress of The Bahamas.”
Through its support of the St. George’s High School food pantry, the Cable Bahamas Cares Foundation is helping sustain an initiative rooted in everyday care. Behind each package is an opportunity to ease a student’s burden and give them more room to focus on learning, growing and shaping their future.
