Hyacinth T. Smith Appointed New Vice President of Legal and Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary at Cable Bahamas Group

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — The Cable Bahamas Group of Companies is proud to announce the appointment of Hyacinth T. Smith as Vice President of Legal and Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary, a role that reflects both her deep legal expertise and her unwavering commitment to progress in the telecommunications space.

Smith has over 17 years of legal experience and has served in key roles across both the public and private sectors, including the Office of the Attorney General and the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA). She is an experienced litigator and well versed in the regulatory framework of the telecommunications industry in the Bahamas which will serve the group well.

“This is a deeply personal milestone,” Smith said. “It’s the culmination of years spent finding my place in this industry. Telecoms became the space where my passion for law came alive—and stepping into this role is the realization of a dream I’ve carried since the very beginning.”

As Cable Bahamas marks 30 years of servicing the nation, Smith is now focused on positioning the legal department for the next phase of growth.

“This is a pivotal time for the industry—and for us as a company,” she said. “We’re focused on getting ahead of critical issues like cybersecurity and data governance. The legal team must be ready to lead from the front.”

Beyond her corporate vision, Smith is deeply committed to championing women and girls in fields where they remain underrepresented—particularly law and ICT. Her appointment stands as a reminder that the journey isn’t always easy, but it is possible.

“There’s a lot of hurdles and roadblocks, especially for young women entering law,” she said. “You hear that the market is oversaturated, that there’s not enough space. But the truth is, there are so many avenues within the legal field.”

Her own story is living proof. A proud graduate of the Bahamian public school system, Smith knows what it feels like to carry the weight of perception and having the odds stacked against you.

“I learned early that it’s not your environment that defines you—it’s who you are in spite of it,” she said. “I could have let the noise shift my path, but I had passion, and I knew where I wanted to be, despite not knowing all the ways I would get there.”

To young women watching her journey, Smith offers this reminder: failure isn’t the end—it’s the lesson.

Cable Bahamas Group CEO Franklyn Butler II said Smith’s elevation to the role reflects the Group’s continued commitment to progressive leadership and a resilient, future-ready legal strategy.

“Hyacinth brings the kind of drive, integrity, and strategic mindset we need to lead in this evolving space,” Butler said. “Her appointment is a proud moment for our organization and underscores the Groups’ commitment to gender equality at all levels of the organization.”

Smith’s new role signals an ongoing investment in the people and vision shaping Cable Bahamas’ next 30 years and beyond.
